Wythe County
Wytheville sits at the junction of I-77 and I-81, the retail and services hub for the region. Rural Retreat and the surrounding valley farms fill out the rest of the county.
Bland County
Ridge-and-valley country between Big Walker and East River mountains, one of Virginia's least populous counties. The Appalachian Trail crosses it, and it has no incorporated towns.
Grayson County
Independence is the county seat, and Mount Rogers, Virginia's highest peak, and Grayson Highlands State Park anchor the high country. The New River winds through the valleys below.
Carroll County
Hillsville is the county seat, and the Blue Ridge Parkway crosses the county at Fancy Gap. Farms and small subdivisions spread across the plateau between the Parkway and the New River.
Galax City
An independent city on the Carroll-Grayson line and an anchor of the Crooked Road: the Old Fiddlers' Convention has run here since 1935. The smallest jurisdiction in the region by land area.
